Carmelo Good for New York
-ProphetOcho (rappinsports.blogspot.com)
The New York Knicks finally put an end to the "Melo Drama". Finally the Knicks completed the trade for All-Star Carmelo Anthony.
The Knicks also acquired Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman in the deal. In return the Denver Nuggets receive Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, a future first-round draft selection and two future second-round draft selections (originally acquired from Golden State), cash and future draft considerations.
While many fans and members of the media disagree, I think this trade was a no-brainer. The Knicks have had trouble competing in the league ever since the days of Patrick Ewing and they haven't made the playoffs since 2004. Over the years they have signed players to huge undeserving contracts, traded away draft picks and turned off many fans who felt unsatisfied with the Knicks production on the court. If the Knicks want to compete with the Miami, Boston and Orlando they needed to land at least a second super-star like Carmelo Anthony.
Sports talk show host Colin Cowherd was on ESPN Radio talking about the Carmelo trade and he seemed a bit surprised at how several people were saying it's bad for the NBA. Cowherd mentioned that he enjoys the NBA but he mentioned that he constantly receives emails talking bad about the NBA and its players by calling them "thugs". For the past two or three years I have been listening to his show I thought he would be receiving those emails but he never really expressed the amount of negativity towards the NBA.
Colin is a white, middle-aged NBA fan and seemingly speaks the truth about his opinion on many different aspects of life and how it may relate to sports. Cowherd continued by stating that some of the emails disrespecting the NBA and its players is "coded bigotry".
I think people are hating the fact that these "thugs" are making some serious money nowadays. Colin said there is not as much hatred towards the NFL players because most of the quarterbacks are white. I agreed when Cowherd later stated that we, as a society, need to talk more about racial issues. I think most people do not realize how and where most of these players were raised.
I have been working in the sports television industry for the past 10 years and I've noticed a growing dislike against NBA players and the game of today. I am a Puerto Rican male and I grew up in Jersey City, NJ across the Hudson and I have been working in New York City for the past seven years.
I think the Knicks getting Carmelo is great for New York and the economy. Food prices have gone up and unemployment continues to rise across the nation. If we want to recover from the recession we need New York to thrive as the engine for our country's economy. Sports can contribute to our society economically as well as socially. Employment opportunities will open up by having the 2013 MLB All-Star game at Citi Field in Queens, New York along with having the NFL Super Bowl in New Jersey in 2014.
I truly think the kids in my area need the local sports teams to do well. The kids need to have something to look forward to, simply by going home to watch a game or maybe even going to the arena. The gang violence in New York and New Jersey has gotten out of control and the cops are getting laid off, it doesn't make sense.
